VICTORIA CROSS
The Victoria Cross is the highest military award in the UK's honours system, and is awarded for gallantry 'in the face of the enemy' to members of the British armed forces. Since 1857, when Queen Victoria first presented the award, the Victoria Cross has been awarded 1,358 times to 1,355 individuals ~ only 15 awards have been made since the end of World War II.
